What Is The Wild Physique?
Vince Gironda is a name that is forgotten in modern bodybuilding. Despite the fact he never made it to the Insta-Tok era, his influence on modern physique sports can’t be underestimated. In the early 80’s, bodybuilding made a shift from the Davidian physique of Frank Zane and Chris Dickerson to the more massive physiques of Lee Haney and Dorian Yates.
Vince was against this from the start. He was an old-school guy that espoused an ideal of the classic beach physiques of Muscle Beach in Santa Monica. He preached an aesthetic ideal that was more athletic and Tarzan-like with dynamic lines and Davidian symmetry. This ideal he called the Wild Physique.
In the early 2010’s, competitive bodybuilding began two new categories that returned to that ideal with Men’s Physique and Classic Physique. These categories are the most popular for competitors because they are closer to most people’s ideal physique than the Herculean proportions of Open Bodybuilding. Vince is yelling, “I told you I was right!” from beyond the grave.
The Hypertrophy Phase of the Build Your Wild Physique program (click here) is written with this ideal in mind. I wrote the program for people looking to add muscle mass without putting hours everyday into the gym. It is the program I am closing the year with.
For me, I am not just focusing on bodybuilding and needed an abbreviated program that I could fit into a busy work schedule as well as an intensive yoga and qigong practice. This matches up very well with a program for people in my age group looking to add muscle mass. All of the considerations that need to be made for athlete’s that aren’t in their 20s are included in this program:
Mindful Periodization—As training time, energy, and effort are limited, it makes sense to focus on one attribute at a time. Hence, the concept of periodization allows you to train each aspect sequentially with each phase building on the previous one until you reach your goal. This is a targeted phase that maximizes the results we can get from our efforts.
Emphasis on Recovery—The limited selection of exercises with the undulating level of intensity over the three week cycle keeps the body from being overloaded and allows each muscle group to balance the stimulus of training with the necessary rest and recovery. Plus, the overall system has hard sessions alternated with easier ones to prevent the complete system fatigue from really hard phases (like a competition phase).
Measured Overload—The undulating intensity also allows for a gradual increase in training load that allows the body to adapt during the rest within the program. This three week program can be repeated multiple times before you need to deload because it manages the overall training stress so well.
Tempo Focused Exercises—One of the key principles to success as a masters athlete is choosing exercises that do not require heavy loading. Maximum deadlifts leave you exhausted so you cannot do them with high frequency. This program uses exercises that are very effective without putting systemic stress on the body. Additionally, there is an emphasis in this phase to lift with very controlled tempo. This maximizes the time under tension (TUT) for the muscle and increases the amount of work the muscle is doing while minimizing the stress on the nervous system, joints, bones, and non-working muscles. This enhances recovery while maximizing the results.
The complete Build Your Wild Physique program is a periodized program that changes the emphasis from building muscle to building strength before moving into maximum definition. It is the template I am using to chase my dream of being in better shape at 50 than I was at 25.
